Doha, February 10, 2014 -- Qatar Foundation International (QFI), a U.S.-based member of Qatar Foundation (QF) dedicated to connecting cultures and advancing global citizenship through education, announced today the finalists of its third annual Telepresence debate project – the Global Youth For Teledebates (GYFT), in partnership with QatarDebate. Six student finalists from Washington Latin Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. will travel to Doha, Qatar, to participate in an international, cross-cultural debate with six Qatari peers, as well as experience Qatar’s most exciting historic and cultural attractions.

Using the latest TelePresence technology from Cisco, the Global Youth For Teledebates engaged American and Qatari students in a six-month curriculum, including two Telepresence debate rounds. As part of the program, students collaborated internationally to develop and present arguments about whether or not junk food should be allowed in schools. Following the initial debates, the six student finalists were selected, via a competitive selection process, to participate in the Open Tournament of QatarDebate, in February, 2014.

“Global Youth For Teledebates goes beyond the classroom to allow students to connect across geographical, social and cultural boundaries, in a totally immersive experience,” said Maggie Mitchell Salem, Executive Director at QFI. “We are extremely excited to continue this successful program and to provide students with opportunities and experiences that they might not otherwise have. Students interact with their peers on the other side of the world and increase their understanding of another language, culture and way of life. The debate program combines culture and education in a way that truly reflects QFI’s overarching mission of enabling young people to be empowered, global citizens.”
